CHAPTER FOUR

When I was young, my title was orphan. I was abandoned and alone. An expendable child.

But I survived. I grew. And when I was finally strong enough to stand up for myself, I became formidable. Then they called me brave or dangerous. Some used both titles at the same time.

Then I heard the name Alliance whispered on the wind.

Warriors who would defy the monsters who wanted to slaughter us for the mere crime of existing. A group bound together by the simple, common goal of defending the people the world had deemed unworthy of survival.

The Alliance would stand against the Incorporation’s butchers. They would fight against the beasts who slaughter children and mothers and fathers and lovers. They would offer me vengeance in the form of reshaping the world with a hope for a better tomorrow.

I found the Alliance, and I was called soldier. I welcomed the changes they offered and joined the pack. Then I became brother.

Now I am alone again. Isolated. Back to where I started at the boys’ home.

The monsters call me worthy for having obeyed their rules. They call me promising because they think I fight on their side. They call me needed because they want me to do an unthinkable thing to help them build a future I will burn.

When the Alliance sent me into the monsters’ den, they didn’t know the worst horror I would be facing.

Defiler. Victim. Father. To fight against those words would be to destroy the mission my pack is depending on me to achieve.

I would ruin the things I want to be.

I am trapped and alone, and the words will not stop pounding through my head. I am willing to give my life, but I don’t know if I can betray the person I have fought so long to become. I cannot become the monster I hate.

I am lost, and I am afraid.

I wish you were here to help me. I am not strong enough to stand against these shadows alone.

See you in the embers,

~C
